We’re a bit over 4.5 months of life for little Lucy, and so far things are pretty impressive. Right now (as in, right this minute), she’s:
- giving her mother the raspberry
- sitting upright on her own
- wearing socks on her hands
All those represent some pretty impressive developmental changes in the last month. Well, not the socks so much. That’s just a weird side-effect of her constantly keeping her fingers in the little bacteria factory that is her mouth.
Actually, check that. Had to stop writing to take care of some Lucy related things. So, NOW as I write this she’s in her mother’s arms sucking on her frozen teething thingy because we’ve tried everything else to get her crank to go away. She seemed to go from happy and cute to cranky (but still kind of cute) in about 20 minutes. It seems like the culprit might be teething as the cold sucky thing is working, but who knows. Wow, she is pissed. Yeesh. 5:30 bedtime, anyone?
Looks like I’m going to be taking another posting break…
And so now another hour and a half has passed and Lucy is down in bed. We’re not entirely sure what’s going on, but I’m still guessing she’s teething. Before bath and bed, Lucy went to Hysterics Level I and we couldn’t do anything to calm her down. She went into that “next level” cry where she just can’t get it together. The only solution was food and sleep, although we also gave her some baby Tylenol to help with any possible pain (plus a very slight fever). So, we think she’s maybe cutting a tooth. Anyone out there remember how long it took to get that tooth out once it really started to be a problem?
I have to say, nothing makes you feel more like a parent than when your kid isn’t feel well. Watching little Lucy cry so hard she couldn’t catch her breath and not being able to do anything to calm her down is absolutely heartbreaking. She’s just so little and cute that is seems really unfair that she has to ever be sad.
It was fairly spectacular how quickly her mood swung tonight. She was super happy, sitting up and blowing raspberries until…she wasn’t. In only a couple of hours, she was inconsolable and we had to put her to bed an hour early.
Parenting…keeps you on your toes.
And just to finish off this post, here’s the top three most difficult things about parenting:
- resisting climbing into the crib with your baby to hug her while she sleeps because SHE’S SO FREAKIN’ CUTE WHEN SHE SLEEPS ON HER SIDE
- looking at the little bald patch worn on the back of her head (and ignoring the hypocrisy of judging another’s hair whilst my hairline recedes)
- poo

Wow, sitting up already! Strong girl! She’s such a doll, Leah! What big blue eyes.
Teething is so mysterious. I’ve been waiting and waiting for Eleanor’s top two teeth to come in and her gums just get bulgier and bulgier but no teeth appear. It looks like they are just below the surface, but it’s been like that for weeks. So who knows. But she is a cranky girl too.
I probably shouldn’t admit to this, but I *did* use to climb into the crib with James to help him get to sleep. So um, it can be done? But I’m guessing it’s best not to.
