Actually…It’s a Breeze

So I’ve been panicked for awhile now about going back to work after a long time off. What would it be like to not be around the Lucy all the time? Would I remember anything about work stuff? How the hell does pumping work? Would Lucy behave for her grandpa? Running? Knitting? Photos? When does all that fit in?

So I don’t have everything figured out, but I do think that if I just didn’t sleep I could do so much more! Give that isn’t an option some clever scheduling is going to have to happen.

BUT the important things I do have working. Pumping is going great. The client site that I’m at doesn’t have a dedicated room for women to use to pump in, so for the first day I had to go to their other offices across the street and use a room they have there. But they have set up a partition in the lounge area in the bathroom…not IN the bathroom, but it’s a room before you get to the stalls and I used that for my last pumping session yesterday and it was ok. They are still going to get a curtain to put up so that it’s totally private but for now I was able to put a table in the way so people couldn’t walk around the corner and peak in. It’s a pain of course because nursing is just so flippin’ easy, but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Plus as soon as I get more into the rhythm it’ll be fine. My original plan was to do breast feeding for 6 months, but given that it’s so easy AND so FREE I’m going to see if I can continue for the full year. Also, I’m not that cheap of a person, but I am when I have something that works (unless it’s computers and then I’m all, “Hell yes we need a new iMac”) I don’t like paying for another option. Formula is so expensive and I have a free solution, so I’m sticking with it. It’s been absolutely invaluable having my aunt as a help point on this stuff. So thanks to her again.

So let’s see, what else. Leaving Lucy was the other big one that I was worried about. But since my Dad is the day care I get constant updates during the day of how she is doing, and he’ll take little videos of her with our new flip camera and send them our way so although of course I’m missing stuff it’s not as bad as it would be if he wasn’t here.

For me personally, I am enjoying being around other adults during the day. I still know a ton of people here from the last time I was placed at this site and so it’s good to see everyone. A good friend of mine is expecting in July which is fun. I get a little antsy in the afternoon but that is to be expected and not unusual in a job for me anyways as I’m way more of a morning person. I would be happiest if I could work like 5am – 1pm.

For the other things, running, knitting and photography I’m still working on fitting in. Tonight we are going to go running with Lucy in the swanky running stroller. Hopefully that doesn’t fuck with her schedule too much. Knitting I can get a few rows done a night, and photos I have been developing while Jason is cooking. I am thinking I need to get up earlier and do the photo stuff before Lucy gets up. I have been keeping up with the 365 and Lucy 365 in the sense that I have taken pictures every day but I just haven’t been able to post them.

Sometimes it sucks being involved in so many damn things. Eh, who needs sleep!?!

So yeah, I thought it would be a lot more painful coming back to work but so far so good.

This weekend Jason and I are tentatively planning breakfast at Yolk followed by walking home from downtown. We did that last year on this weekend and while at breakfast I said, “One day we’ll come here with our kids” (because Yolk in the morning is just jam packed with kids). Turns out I was probably about 3 weeks pregnant at that time because I got a positive pregnancy test the next weekend. So, yeah could be a fun tradition to do. We got this rain cover for the running stoller but as our regular stroller is also by Baby Jogger, I think that it should fit on both. So weather shouldn’t be a problem in stopping the plan.

Alright, well let’s go Wednesday.

Also the Up in the Air soundtrack is awesome.

  • Two things – first, PROPS to you for planning on breastfeeding for a year!!! It’s funny how demographic that is. In Memphis it seems like it’s hard to get women to breastfeed for 3 months! Also, since you are the queen of Mac and computer stuff :) , do you have recommendations on the MacBook Pro vs. the regular MacBook? I am planning on buying one with my tax return and I need some advice on what’s best. If you have time. :) THANKS!

  • I wish I had half of the things that mothers have today. 13 years ago when my oldest was born I had to pump in the bathroom twice during my shift. I wish they had a pumping room. It sounds like you are making a smooth transition back to work.

Glad to hear things are working out well for you! Thanks for posting about your pumping situation–as someone who will be dealing with this stuff in a few months, it’s really helpful to find out how this stuff actually works (because right now I’ve got an idea of how it will work but theory doesn’t always, or usually, equal reality)!

Hey, I’m so happy it’s all working for y’all! I breastfed both kids to right around a year (13 months and 11 months) and was really glad I did. I think it’s especially great that you’re doing it considering the family history of allergies.

  • Glad things are working out – and I felt the same about breastfeeding vs. formula. It’s what is best for them plus it’s free! I just made it to a year last week…I pumped twice, sometimes three times at work in a bathroom, so yay for you having a place. Good luck with it all!
